Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad says there is big potential in franchising nasi lemak, dim sum and thosai worldwide but the lack of knowledge in managing a franchise is a handicap for Malaysians.
“We have three big races, the Malays, Chinese and Indians, each with a wide range of delicious food in Malaysia but we have not seen our food franchised globally.
“That is why we have not developed like McDonald’s or Starbucks,” he said during the Malaysia Franchise Awards 2018 here tonight.
Domestic Trade and Consumer Minister Affairs Saifuddin Nasution was also present at the event.
Mahathir said the franchise industry had grown as it allowed businesses to grow even though the founder of a particular business venture did not have the money to expand the business on his own.
“The system allows others to own the business and succeed as business owners.”
But he said there had been “jealousy” among business owners who had refused to share their business knowledge with others.
