Back in April this year, Kenny Rogers Roasters Singapore sparked public panic in some camps when it suddenly announced that it was closing its last remaining franchised outlet at Great World City. The chicken-centric casual restaurant chain was founded by American country singer Kenny Rogers, and was beloved by Singaporeans for its comforting southern American dishes like rotisserie chicken, baby back ribs, mac & cheese and corn muffins.
KRR’s Singapore franchise rights has since been taken over by local F&B company Lao Huo Tang Group, which also runs an eponymous chain of Chinese soup restaurants as well as Eng’s Wantan Noodle’s mall outlets. They bought the rights from Malaysian conglomerate Berjaya Group, which runs the KRR franchise in Malaysia. Last Sunday (October 6), Kenny Rogers Roasters Singapore opened its comeback outlet at the revamped basement of Jem mall in Jurong.
Other than ownership, Kenny Rogers Roasters Singapore has also changed its concept quite a bit: it’s now halal-certified. Gone are the pork rib dishes, and the ingredients used in the kitchen are all from halal suppliers now. “The recipes used are still the same, but the prices for the menu are about 30% lower [than the previous franchised restaurant’s]. It’s much more affordable now,” shares James Cheong, Lao Huo Tang Group’s director of operations.
