A franchise business is often considered a high-risk industry. It always depends on the business nature and the brand itself to grow together as a better chain. The founder of MI Art, Sammion Loo Phek Choo put herself against all odds to start unique art tuition and relishing a franchise opportunity in the market.
She was pleased to share her background and said, “I started an education business after graduating from college. So in 2019, I decided to open an art class under the inspiration of Professor Howard Gardner’s philosophy about “Multiple Intelligences” Through her inspiration, her objective has been utterly cleared since the day MI Art is founded. With the belief of art is the future of the education industry, she always is confident that art education has more to do than only allowing kids to turn into an artist. She works hard on promoting the concept and showing the future of art to parents.
In the first year of MI Art’s journey, they started a lot of publicity by offering drawing classes, kids’ hobby workshops and holiday camps in many schools including international schools. Soon, the challenges came. The outbreak of Covid-19 in 2020 has changed everything. The education industry is greatly impacted as well. Physical classes are being restricted; therefore, MI Art had no choice but to transform into virtual learning.
With good perseverance and faith in the business, she managed to get more than 3,000 students in just 2 years, and it is still growing. This remarkable journey was participated by students from all over the globe such as Singapore, the UK, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Malaysia as well.
She said that “The best achievement that we had is having more than 99% of positive feedback and compliments from parents and students on Google Review as well as Facebook Review. It is a remarkable milestone and honor for us to have such high recognition from them”.
Moreover, the success continues as she also awarded as the Best Intelligent Figures 2021 from the China Press. In addition, MI Art being honoured as the Consumer’s Choice Award from MTPN (Majlis Tindakan Pengguna Negara). Both remarkable awards have been the significant proof that aesthetic education is the current trend in Malaysia’s education and MI Art is doing well being the trust brand in the industry.
The critical success factor and uniqueness of MI Art is its teaching concept. The 2 hours lesson includes a painting and drawing session that advocates the center’s philosophy. One of the best things is that they always link academic knowledge in their art classes which is fun and useful.
Other than that, they have a special class for 3 to 6 years old kids which is called Messy Art Play Programme. This programme is focusing on developing the kids through their dirty work.
Sammion believes that dirty work can help kids in childhood development such as communication, language, and physical development as well as supporting them independently.
In addition, before inducting students into different levels of drawing classes, a simple test will be conducted which aims to screen the kid’s future talents. After having a basic understanding of the student, teachers will be using the appropriate teaching method throughout the learning journey.
For future planning, they tend to bring back physical classes as it will enhance the performance of teaching and learning process. Both teacher and students can interact with each other, and it will definitely be beneficial for everyone. Asides from that, they pledged to bring the brand MI Art to the international market and widen their franchise chain to 150 branches.
